Review: The New Quave Club Banger Flat

In November 2019, QCB released a new version of the flat-top banger that had some major improvements, notably a thicker bottom dish for more heat retention and a deeper nail overall. We got our hands on a few of these and, after a few months thorough product testing, we’re ready to share our thoughts on the new and improved Flat Top QCB.

The new QCB flat currently retails for $170 and is significantly deeper, with a thicker bottom disc, than the previous iteration.

Since this is our first banger review, we need to set a standard. Let’s start with four major characteristics by which to judge a line of quartz products:

We’ll rate bangers on each of these areas from 1-6 (as a nod to the 6* hash-rating scale).

Rating Summary

Heat retention: 5.5/6
Aesthetics: 5.5/6
Functionality: 6/6
Consistency: 5/6
Overall: 5.5/6

Suggested Times

Heat up: 30s
Cool down: 1m15s

Heat Retention

Consistently, these new flat tops have markedly higher heat retention than the old version. You can see the difference just by looking:

The older, smaller Quave flat top banger.

Thanks to the deeper bottom dish and overall just a bigger nail, creating a bigger heatsink, you’re going to need to increase your cooldown time or decrease your heat up times compared to an old nail. A few of us used a 0:30 heat up, 1:05 cool down with old style nails, but I definitely had to change to 0:30 heat up, 1:15 cool down with the new style.

Overall, this is great heat retention – more comparable to a Toro Grail than ever. It doesn’t get much better than this. If you take massive globs, you may want a little more – but this can easily be achieved by adding an insert or bead.

Score: 5.5/6

Aesthetics

QCB has always been the best designed banger in the game, especially when looking at the balance between the bucket and neck of the banger. The new style is no exception: there’s still a perfect balance despite the large bucket.

QCB offers laser-etched styles, which are quite aesthetic. Of course, we’d love if they offered colored bangers (e.g. the fumed Binary Bangers they make for Mothership). At least in hue, there’s room to grow, but this banger is so beautiful that this new style gets a near-perfect rating.

Score: 5.5/6

Functionality

QCB really addressed the major pain point of “necking” with this iteration: while the old smaller buckets were short enough that your concentrate sometimes ended up sliding down the neck, the new buckets are made tall enough to prevent this.

The flat top is well-beveled and fits any bubble cap (or spinner). The inside of the banger is perfectly smooth and flat, which makes it easy to Q-tip clean. Also, because of the gentle curve of the neck, it’s easy to get a Q-tip in there for deep cleaning.

Overall, we couldn’t ask for a better shape and overall function.

Score: 6/6

Consistency

This is a tough category, since all American Quartz is at least partially handmade, but we think that consistency between nail (within a single batch or across batches) is a big boon to consumers, especially ones whoo use timers. Although Quave’s bangers are some of the most consistent in the game, there’s still room to improve on this front.

When comparing bangers from the same batch, there is minor inconsistency on overall banger height and bucket thickness. This impacts the heat retention capabilities: out of the box cooldown times (with a 30s heatup and 575F target temperature) ranged from about 1:12 to about 1:20.

Ultimately, we’d like something that is more consistent, so that getting perfect dabs isn’t so hard out of the box, and to make it easier for beginners and people who don’t have temp readers to start dabbing with a timer.
