1. Benefits of Cardamom

Cardamom is a staple ingredient in ancient Tibetan remedies.

The spice is known for its antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. All of which play a pivotal role in supporting our immune system and fighting off various disorders.

The main benefits of cardamom include:

Cooking With Cannabis

In order to experience the benefits of activated THC or CBD, the cannabis flower must first undergo a process called decarboxylation.

Decarboxylation occurs when cannabis is exposed to heat, light, cofactors, or solvents, all of which can be manipulated in your own kitchen. Without decarboxylation, you may not experience the full range of beneficial health effects of cannabinoids such as THC or CBD.

Before incorporating cannabis as an ingredient to be used in various culinary applications such as cooking, baking, oil extraction, and more, it’s important to understand the process of cannabis decarboxylation and why it must occur during the cooking process in order to experience the health benefits of THC or CBD.

Cannabis-Infused Chai Latte

Discover how to make a delicious Cannabis-Infused Chai Latte, a warming herb & spice-infused beverage at-home to naturally support your holistic lifestyle with anti-inflammatory health benefits and mouth-watering flavor. This Cannabis-Infused Chai latte is naturally vegan, vegetarian, Paleo, and Keto-diet friendly.

Ingredients

  • 2 (13.5 ounce) cans full-fat coconut milk, unsweetened
  • 15 whole cardamom pods
  • 8 whole black peppercorns
  • 2 whole allspice berries
  • 1 whole cinnamon stick (approximately 4″)
  • 1 whole anise star
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 2 tablespoons Ceylon tea
  • 1 teaspoon decarboxylated cannabis flower
  • 3 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1/4″ piece of vanilla bean, split or 1/8 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1″ piece fresh ginger (thinly sliced)

Instructions

  1. Preheat a water bath to 185° F. Various water bath techniques are explained in the notes section below.
  2. In a small cast iron pan over medium heat, add the whole cardamom pods. Constantly move the pan to stir and prevent burning for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the whole black peppercorns and cook an additional 3-4 minutes, constantly moving the pan to stir.
  4. Add the cinnamon stick, whole allspice berries, whole anise pod, and whole cloves. Cook for 2-3 minutes and then turn off the pan. You are looking for fragrant spices with a light golden brown hue.
  5. Shake well and pour coconut milk into a mason a jar and then add the brown sugar, Ceylon tea, decarbed cannabis flower, vanilla bean or extract, and fresh ginger.
  6. When the spices are cool enough to handle, break the cinnamon stick by hand into smaller pieces and hand crack open the cardamom pods.
  7. Add all of the toasted spices to the coconut milk mixture and gently stir to incorporate.
  8. With a clean paper towel, wipe the rim of the jar and place the lid on, tighten the metal ring till fingertip tight (it does not need to be tightened all the way down.)
  9. Carefully lower the sealed jar into the water bath. When the water bath returns to 185° F and starts a timer for 2 hours. Allow cooking undisturbed.
  10. After 2 hours, remove the mason jar from the water bath and place it onto a tea towel-lined work surface. Remove the lid and give a couple of gentle stirs.
  11. Using a fine-mesh strainer, cone filter, doubled up cheesecloth or even a coffee filter; strain the tea into another mason jar or other heat resistant vessel.
  12. This can be enjoyed immediately, garnished with fresh ground cinnamon or decarbed kief for a little extra jazz. This chai can also be enjoyed cold.
  13. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week. If you plan to reheat this chai after cooling, do so slowly in a saucepot. Do NOT microwave the chai as you will risk overheating and denaturing your cannabis cannabinoids.

Notes

  • Make sure the cannabis flower is decarbed prior to adding it to this recipe or you may not experience the activated effects of CBD or THC.
  • Any Black Tea will work for this recipe, we used Ceylon, but you can play around with different flavors for your liking.
  • If you are using an Immersion Cooker or Sous Vide Cooker, fill a vessel deep enough to hold a 1-quart mason jar with an inch of water above lid with hot water. Preheat the water to 185° F.
  • If you are using a Crock Pot or Instant Pot for your water bath, you will need to divide the recipe equally between 2 (16 ounces) mason jars. Fill the cooking vessel with enough hot water to cover both mason jars with an inch of water above the lids.
  • If using an Instant Pot; set the slow cooker mode to 185° F and preheat.
  • If using a Crock-Pot; preheat on high until 185° F is reached, then turn to low, a digital probe thermometer is recommended for Crock-Pot to ensure accurate temperature control.
  • We recommend sanitizing my jars in the 185° F water for at least 5-minutes before filling with coconut milk. This step isn’t necessary, but good safety practice.

High Chai: Cannabis Infused Tea Recipe

High Chai, aka cannabis-infused tea, is one of my favorite recipes for two reasons:

  1. Chai tea is delicious
  2. This is a great way to use your leftover material after making cannabis coconut oil in the crock pot .

The last time I made weed tea, I made waaayyyy too much of it and it went gnar in my cooler at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival last June where I forgot about it until I moved in November.

If you make a batch of weed tea and you can’t use it in the near future, just don’t add the coconut milk right away. You can freeze it in individual servings and when you’re ready, let it thaw, reheat, add the coconut milk, and enjoy not having to clean out 8 mason jars full of funk.

So… High Chai Weed Tea.

Some notes before you make the High Chai Weed Tea

Since writing this post in 2015, I’ve had a few questions about this recipe.

How much High Chai can I drink in one sitting?

Try a small teacup (1/4 cup) and then go from there. If it’s too strong, you can always dilute it with straight chai tea. This one can sneak up on you because it’s a beverage and you might be tempted to drink a lot of it at once. It’s impossible to gauge how many mg are in the cup.

Can I just use the pre-made chai tea packets from my local grocery store?

Yup. If you don’t want to make the chai tea from scratch, you can brew the chai tea from the bag and then add the satchel.

Will this recipe work with other types of milk, including dairy milk?

Yes. You can make this recipe with dairy milk, lactose-free dairy milk, soy milk, oat milk, almond milk, etc. If you’re using dairy milk, make sure you are using low heat so you don’t accidentally scorch the milk.

Can you use leftover tincture material or just oil?

No one will stop you from using leftover tincture material but it might make your high chai taste funky. Oil will give you a better flavor.

High Chai Weed Tea Recipe

This weed tea recipe is one of the 50+ recipes included in the second edition of Wake & Bake: the eBook.

1.5 tspn Garam Masala

3 tspn Cinnamon

10 Cardamom Pods (crushed)

6 whole Cloves (crushed)

2-3 T fresh Grated Ginger

6 Cups Water

2. Boil water, over med-high heat for 10-20 minutes.

3. Reduce heat to medium-low.

Bag of Leftover Plant Material from making Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil

6-7 Organic Black Tea Bags

5. Steep weed tea for 10-15 minutes.

6. Allow to cool enough so you can pull the cheesecloth bag out of the water and squeeze out the remaining oil and tea.

7. Strain all spices. Add

1/4-1/2 Cup Non Dairy Milk (full fat coconut milk is best)

and whisk insanely or hit it with an immersion blender (this will temporarily emulsify the oil).

Sweeten to taste. Re-emulsify as necessary.

Hi – this a question regarding your article about the mbm machine and making vegetable glycerine tincture.

One question. Did you find running 2 cycles for 16 hrs make the final product more potent?

I made myself a batch using about 2.5oz of great ak47 and 3 cups of vg, and I wound up needing to use two tbsp to get a dose that would help me sleep. That seems like a lot….

Any advice is appreciated,

A 2 tablespoon dose of what you described would mean you are consuming about 1/10th of a gram of that great ak47, which sounds like a reasonable dose.

Garam masala is all spices ground up. You can get packs in any indian asian store. Its used in curry’s also. Hope that helps.?

How does this recipe scale up?

I just made it using 1oz of herbal matter and 4x all of the other ingredients to match up the proportions. Could only fit 3 litres of water in my pot though (supposed to be 6 after scaling, only discovered this while trying it), so figured I’d make it double strength and dilute after.

Smells amazing while it’s brewing, but once done it just tastes like weed and black tea. Diluted to half strength as per the plan it doesn’t taste of anything. It’s really bitter too. Probably going to have to throw a bunch of sugar in to make it drinkable, as I’m not a fan of waste!

I’m a massive lover of chai, and this just doesn’t taste like it, so on that basis it feels like I’ve done something wrong. As though I could have saved myself a whole load of effort just by dunking the bag into a pot of black tea.

Any pointers on upscaling the recipe would be gratefully received 🙂

My mother doesn’t care for chai tea. Could I just use the 6 cups of boiling water and then reduce heat and add 7 bags of red rose tea and the bag of plant material from gm oil to make tea?
Any reason this would not work?

Gave this a try last night after brewing the cana-coconut oil all day and it was delicious!! For me, I squeeze out A LOT of the oil out of the bag and found that after making the tea there was no emulsifying issues with it, no whisk was needed and only a few oil spots floated a long the top- yet we still got a very couch locked body high from one full glass of tea each after 3 hours or so. Great stuff!

What is the yield for this recipe?

I’ve done this recipe a few times and I wish you would rewrite it so it’s easier to follow.
First step was to boil “weed tea.” But then the second step is to add the leftover satchel from the infusion and the tea bags. So, what is boiling “weed tea” mean?
Also what does GM stand for other than Garam Masala? What is GM oil?
Your recipe never says when to add the aromatics.

Hello, I’m not adding the milk until I’m ready to use each morning. That being said, it would be so much easier to store the pitcher of tea (minus milk) on counter.
