No Pipe, No Problem: 3 Ideas for Making a Bong in a Pinch
Thursday December 21, 2017
T here’s no greater buzzkill than having weed and a lighter but no way to smoke it. Fortunately, as every true stoner knows, when there’s weed, there’s a way. If you’ve ever found yourself with a fresh stash and no way to smoke it, then take notes because these may be some of the best ways to make a bong in a pinch courtesy of stoners who have been there before.
Easy DIY Water Bong
All you need to make a basic water bong is a bottle, a bowl with a down stem (If you don’t have a bowl with a down stem, you can make one using an old pen barrel and a nut from the hardware store), a box cutter and something to seal everything up like electrical tape, hot glue, or silly putty.
To make your bong, cut a small hole located about half way down the side of your bottle just big enough for your down stem to fit, then secure in place using electrical tape, hot glue, or silly putty. After the bowl is secure, check to make sure it’s airtight by inhaling through the bottle’s opening and while plugging the bowl with your hand. If you can still pull air through the piece, check the seals and adjust accordingly.
Once you’ve confirmed an airtight seal, add enough water to cover the base of your down stem, pack a bowl and take a rip through the top.
There are also companies who specialize in making custom attachments to turn any water bottle into a bong.
Byba, or Bring Your Bong Anywhere, is an easy-to-use product that attaches to any water bottle and allows consumers to smoke flower or joints from a bowl with ease.
How to Make a Gravity Bong
Adding water to a pipe or bong adds a layer of filtration to make it hit more smoothly, but water can be used to pump the smoke into your lungs, too, with the use of a good ol’ fashioned gravity bong. The idea is to use gravity first pull the smoke out of the combusted flower and into the bong then to use gravity again to push it back out of the bong and into your lungs for a huge hit.
Gravity bongs make for pretty awesome party attractions, too.
To make a gravity bong, you’ll need two bottles (or a 2-liter bottle and a 5-gallon bucket), one of which should fit easily into the other. Cut the bottom off the smaller bottle (leaving the bulk of the bottle’s length in tact) and cut the top off the larger bottle if there is one. Next, affix a bowl to the top of the smaller bottle, being sure the seal is tight but also easily removable for later by attaching a bowl (or a nut as mentioned earlier) to the bottle’s cap using a box cutter and electrical tape or hot glue.
Next, fill the larger bottle with water and add the smaller bottle to it so that minimal air is trapped inside of the small bottle. Add the bowl to the small bottle top, throw some freshly-ground herb to the bowl, then add flame to the green. While lighting the bowl, slowly pull the small bottle upward, which will pull the smoke from the weed into the small bottle as it rises.
Don’t pull the small bottle completely out of the water or the smoke will escape! Instead, simply remove the bowl from the small bottle and replace it with your mouth. Push down on the bottle as you inhale to fill your lungs quickly and get high in a hurry.
How to Make an Earth Bong
There’s something poetic about using the earth to consume the cannabis from which it came. To help celebrate the bounty Mother Nature gives us (or just to get high in a pinch), make a pipe out of the very ground you walk on.
To make an earth bong, just use a few long, sturdy sticks to dig a few holes in damp soil (but not saturated) about a foot or two apart then connect them underground. Add a bottle with the bottom removed to one end of the tunnel (this will be your mouth piece) and a bowl to the other end, packing loose soil around them to ensure the tunnel is airtight. Add some weed to the bowl end of your tunnel, have a friend spark it and take a deep breath. Want to heat the weed with nature, too? Use a magnifying glass and the sun to spark your bowl to really impress your friends.
Stoners are innovative, for sure, and no where is that more apparent than when there’s weed and a need to smoke it.
