deer antler pipes.
crafting tabaco pipes is a hobby of mine. i was wondering, could it be harmful to smoke from a deer antler pipe? could the fumes be poison in any way?
I know some Native Americans that smoke from antler pipes. They said you need to slowly break them in, because too much heat burns the pipe and that’s like burnt hair; nasty.
The danger I do know of is antler dust. I make knife handles from antlers and I always wear a respirator dust mask. Like the kind you wear for painting that has toxic fumes. Two local guys laughed at me for it, they are both dead now. Neither smoked tobacco or weed and both died from lung infections related to antler dust. It fills your lungs and it cant get out and after some time it rots inside your lungs.
“While working with deer antlers seems harmless enough, if you learn nothing else from this site, I hope you learn that you need to wear a face mask! Any high speed grinding or cutting on deer antlers produces dust particles that are extremely hazardous. Don’t take any chances!”
I found this for you;
Deer Antler Pipe
I use a 44 bullet casing as a bowl piece when I carved antler pipes for extra cash. Just drill the hole, pound the shell casing down snd cut it off with the band saw. Bench grinder to flush it up and drill the other end and put same size casing in that end. I posted a pic of the pipes I used to throw together. Including a brass rod fully enclosed for cleaning and a slit throung the antler by the mouth piece to change out screens. Hope this helps or answered some of your answers. I loved it for fast cash and a hobby but eventually became a business of large scale antler carvings.
I have used antler pipes for over 50 years for tobacco. You need to char the inside of the bowl with a flame like a bic lighter after you give it a coat of honey. The honey boils and works into the antler and gives it a smoother flavor. I agree with bear crap wear a dust mask don’t want that dust in your lungs.
never hotbox the pipe you have to lightly puff on it until the tobacco resin soaks into it real good and even then dont get it real hot. as soon as the bowl feels hot to the hand stop and let it cool down. if it was toxic i would be long gone by now and im still kicking!
No, it is not harmful. I have been making deer antler pipes since the late 1960’s, and have been making and selling them at flea markets and biker swapmeets since the early 1990’s. I have made and sold literally thousands, and no one has suffered any ill effects, and in fact, many people come back year after year at the swapmeets to buy another to add to their “collection”. Now, it will taste “funny” until it gets “broken in”. but there is nothing harmful to it. However, I suggest washing it to remove all the excess “dust” before using it. In fact, one “head shop” in Tulsa that I have been to, sells antler pipes themselves.
Just to add this. There used to be a fella who sold antler pipes online. His name was Blue, and his websight was called “Old Hippy Antler Pipes”. I heard that he retired several years ago, and when he did he shut down his websight. But, if you are interested, you may still find reference to him or his pipes if you look.

Antler smoking pipe?’s
I have some extra Elk antler (IIRC) setting around. Tonight while working with some of the Antler I wound up with an odd size piece. So I got to thinking what could I make with this piece. A Pipe came to mind. So here are the question’s!
Is it safe to Smoke Tabacco through an Antler pipe? Are there any concerns with putting Antler in your mouth? Yes it’s clean! Any thing I should be aware of?
My dogs chew on elk antler without any health issues. I’d think you’d be fine since you’re just holding it in your mouth and not chewing it (although I certainly chew my pipe stems).
