An Interview With Nick Filchy, CEO of Banger Buddy

What is your Company? How did you come up with the idea?

Bangerbuddy is a college lifestyle brand with a 4 Million follower fanbase on Instagram. The idea started as a failed iPhone app startup, the iPhone app failed due to lack of funding and knowledge about apps and the Instagram page for the app was converted into a college content page.

What is your backstory? Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Junior year of high school I thought of an app that would be basically a social media platform that revolves around parties and events, so basically you would follow all your friends and public figures and see what events and parties they are interested in & will be attending. The app failed miserably and all I was left with was a page on Instagram (@bangerbuddy) with about 10,000 followers. At that point in time, people were not really making money off of social media and I had no idea that I would ever make money off an IG page, but I continued to run the page all day and night and post epic content and months later it became a full time source of income for me and after 1 semester of attending university I decided to drop out and pursue my IG page full time.

What gave you that Entrepreneurship spark and drive when you started? Tell me about the day you decided to take this on as a full-time venture.

After Highschool the page really took off. I had over 100k followers and was making solid money for an 18-year-old student. What really changed my life and motivated me to pursue this full time was starting a Shopify store. Sean Kelly from Jersey Champs invited me over his house during the winter break between fall & spring semester and for almost a week straight taught me the ins and outs of Shopify. With my knowledge of Shopify, I managed to make more money in one month than I have ever made in a year from selling promotions on my page. After seeing that taste of success I stopped attending classes for the spring semester and sat at Starbucks every single day growing my website and brand.

Where do you see your company 5 years from now?

In 5 years I see my company being the biggest college lifestyle brand out there. Providing everything from college news, media, clothing, music, you name it. In 5 years that is very doable.

Do you have a mentor?

I have a few mentors that really give me solid advice for my day to day operations. Most of them I cannot name, but one mentor that has really given me help from the start is Sean Kelly. Sean and I text all of the time and always give each other any tips or knowledge we ever come across.

What’s the most valuable advice you’ve received that contributed to your personal or professional success?

The most valuable advice I would say I ever received was to be smart with incoming money. Reinvesting a lot of your income back into growing your business is key, as well as putting as much away in savings as you possibly can for a rainy day. Especially in the social media industry, things are super volatile and you never know when the plug can be pulled on you or a simple algorithm change can shut your business down.

What is your Daily Routine?

I wake up around 7–8 am, drink my morning coffee every single morning, then I draft posts and find content for the rest of the day’s postings, and finally, I start to book ads for the day and evening. Once that is all completed I leave the rest of my day for meetings, phone calls, & social life. Social life is key, you do NOT want to only live and breathe your business. You must leave time for doing things that don’t make you money but make you happy.

Which person or company do you most admire and why?

I really admire Mark Zuckerberg and his success with Facebook & Instagram. I think he created one of the most amazing platforms we currently have and really admire his ways of performing business.

What have you sacrificed for success?

I sacrificed a whole lot of free time & my college education for my success. Not that I regret leaving college so far, but it is obviously risky to not have a degree to fall back on.

How do you maintain or find new inspiration?

The social media industry is so competitive. The inspiration never dies down because it’s almost like a never-ending race to have more followers than someone else, and sometimes you pass them and then they pass you and then I start ramping things up to pass them again.

What’s one rule that guides your life?

Do not trust anyone, at least in the beginning. A lot of people will burn you and try to take what is yours. I speak this from experience. I have had employees that I instantly gave my trust to steal money and cut corners ruthlessly.

How do you prioritize your most important tasks?

This is a tough one. There is a lot of tasks that drop on my head every day and some of them get pushed to the side and others get instantly handled. Really depends on the value and compensation of each task. A high paying task for a highly valued client will get done way before a low paying task for someone that really does not bring much value to my table.

What have been the most important contributors to your success?

Consistency is definitely important. Once I found strategies that worked for me, I had to be consistent and scale them up until I could not scale them any higher. Just like the saying, “If it is not broken, do not fix it”. If something is working amazingly for you then run it up, and do not stop until it does not work anymore.

Can you share a story about the funniest or biggest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

Getting ahead of myself was definitely the biggest mistake I made when I was starting out. I believed at one point that I was gonna be a millionaire by 18 and drive a Lamborghini to high school. When that obviously did not happen, it was kind of upsetting. I set goals that were way too out of reach for me at the time and it made me feel like I did not accomplish a lot even though I did.

How have you used your success to bring good to the world?

I have helped out many young entrepreneurs with free meetings and tips. I try my hardest to assist anyone that I see is really hustling and just not quite making it work yet. I remember when I was that kid, not knowing where I was exactly going and begging for advice from successful people and I was blessed enough to have met and received advice from very successful and great people.
