Hip hop and fashion have always been inextricably linked. Whether it’s rappers name-dropping labels or artists like Gunna and A$AP Ferg sitting front row at New York Fashion Week this year, the affinity between rap/hip hop and fashion (whether streetwear or couture) has never been stronger. But before the Migos rapped about “Versace” or Lil Yachty linked up with Nautica, hip hop fashion looked a lot different.
Throughout the 90s and the 2000s, hip hop fashion was epitomized by “urbanwear” (read “black fashion”) labels. You know, the FUBUs, the Rocawears, the Cross Colours, etc. So as NYFW 2019 comes to a close, we’re throwing it back and commemorating the iconic urban brands that first built the bridge between hip hop and high fashion.
